German Whale Rescue Operations publishes underwater footage of the humpback whale Timmy/Hope. The footage documents injuries and enables independent verification of controversial accounts on social media.
GWRO hereby makes underwater footage of the humpback whale Timmy/Hope, found dead off the Danish island of Anholt, available for viewing and verification purposes. Our organisation received the material for educational and investigative purposes.
With this publication, we also wish to counteract misleading accounts on social networks, where individual still frames have been extracted from the footage and manipulated to present a distorted picture.
An example of this is the alleged observation of a dorsal fin based on a still frame from Video #2 (approx. minute 9:20). In Video #7 (from approx. minute 6:15), however, the cut on the dorsal fin is clearly visible.
In addition, Video #2 (from approx. minute 7:49), among others, documents close-up shots of the deep injuries to the whale's fluke, which are likely attributable to tensile forces previously applied during the unauthorised release of the animal in the Skagerrak.
